Tormentors can be extremely dangerous in groups, as their entire goal is to blow themselves up as close as possible to the player to deal maximum damage;
therefore, maintaining distance and taking them out before they can get close is ideal. In the case where one gets too close, you can try to avoid the explosion
by sliding away or minimizing the damage with armor and perks like 
Juggernog.
